When they were twelve, their mother died of drug-resistant tuberculosis. The girls were kept away from her to protect them, but Bev snuck out of her grandparent's house, ran home, and refused to be pulled away from her mother. She held her mother's hand as she died, and was overwhelmed by the memories of her life. A short time later, she was thinking of her mother and accidentally took her form, discovering the second aspect of her power.
Their father tried to care for them, but he was grieving for his wife and not emotionally capable of raising two children alone. They went to live with their grandparents, who had friends in the mutant community and convinced Bev that she wasn't cursed. Unfortunately, Bev had contracted their mother's illness. One night while she slept, Samantha snuck into her room, held her hand, and swallowed everything she'd found in the medicine cabinet. Bev was woken by the rush of her sister's death. For a long time she refused to acknowledge why Samantha had done it, but as her disease worsened her grandparents convinced her to accept her sister's gift. From then on she made permanent use of Samantha's disease-free form.
Her grandparents insisted she learn about computers to prepare for adulthood in a modern world. She discovered a talent with computers and eventually became a skilled hacker. She tracked a lot of information, including keeping an eye on the movements of various lesser-known heroes. When she realized that three of them seemed to be trailing the same organization, she contacted them and brought them together. Eric suggested she help them, and the team Reborn was formed.

Backstory: Jasper grew up in Metairie but moved to New Orleans to attend college. He fell in with a bad crowd and after a year dropped out to join their gang, the Devil Boys. Eventually the gang became more violent and dangerous. Jasper decided he'd have no more part in it and quit, beating anyone who came after him until the gang left him alone. He became a thief specializing in lifting jewels, feeling that was acceptable as long as he never hurt anyone.
One day he broke into a scientific lab looking for valuable equipment and found a device holding what appeared to be two large green jewels. When he tried to take them the device activated, fusing the jewels to his palms. He later discovered that they could create either blades or projectiles of strange green light and were controlled by his mind. He returned to the lab the next night to try and determine what they were, and found the lead scientist walking outside with a man he later learned was Thomas Quint, leader of a massive organized crime ring. Quint was convinced that one of the scientists had stolen his weapons. The man with him swore that they were already at work on new ones without the flaws of the originals, but Quint said he had all their data and didn't need them anymore. He shot the scientist then triggered a bomb in the building, killing everyone inside.
Jasper couldn't get over the knowledge that his 'harmless' crimes had caused so much death. He swore to use his new abilities to stop crime, but especially to bring down Quint. He started by returning home to reconcile with his parents and ask for their help. They revealed that they were the heroes Martial and Assault, now retired, and agreed to help him with his newfound mission. Unfortunately they are pretty much his only supporters; because his abilities can cause great harm, the civilians he's trying to protect have dubbed him a dangerous criminal and the police are determined to arrest him.

When people became suspicious he stole enough to send 20-year-old Eric to America, then turned himself in to prevent suspicion falling on anyone else in the family. He has been in and out of prison ever since, and he and Eric rarely speak. Their parents, believing Eric knew about or was involved in the thefts, have no contact with either of them.
Eric found work as a mechanic and eventually was able to open his own shop, specializing in custom vehicle mods. He was working underneath one one day, three years before the start of the story, when the lift malfunctioned and the car fell before he could get fully out of the way. His left arm was severed, and his left leg was so badly injured it had to be amputated below the knee.
When Eric first woke after the accident, he wasn't in the hospital as he expected. He was in a lab, and the scientists there had attached mechanical limbs in place of his lost ones. Pretending to be unconscious, Eric heard that the first phase of the procedure was a success, and they were ready to test the brain implants. Unwilling to have experimental machines placed in his brain, Eric waited for nightfall and escaped, aided by his powerful new limbs. On the way he stole a file documenting what had been done to him. He later discovered that the lab he broke out of had been connected to the mysterious criminal known as Maria Westing. He became determined to find her, and learn just what he got caught up in. Backstory: Kira's parents died in a car crash when she was 14, and her brother Marcus took responsibility for her. Their town was a quiet place, except for a few times a year when biker gangs would pass through on their way to rallies in the nearby city. Most were harmless, but a few of the gangs were made up of thugs who would steal, vandalize, and commit assault. Kira was taking sword-fighting lessons and her brother was on his school's wrestling team, so when she was 17 they decided to do something about the gangs. To avoid retribution, they wore costumes and called themselves Sword and Shield.
The gangs eventually changed their routes and the town was left in peace. 2 years later, when she was 21, more trouble arrived. Attempting to force a local retired bio-engineer to work for him, Thomas Quint had a virus released in the area that caused an extreme increase in strength and aggression. Animals began attacking anyone caught in the open. With no explanation, people began blaming Sword and Shield, claiming that they engineered the problem so there would be need for them. People got fed up; and one day, after saving a family attacked in their own backyard, the father retrieved his gun and shot them.
Kira was paralyzed from the waist down, but Marcus managed to carry her to safety in an empty storefront before he died. Afraid to reveal herself, she called the only person she trusted, Marcus' girlfriend Kristen. At Kira's insistence Kristen brought her some clothes and helped her change, so she wouldn't have to go to the hospital in her costume. Before they could leave, however, an infected coyote was drawn by the scent of blood and attacked. Kristen was killed, and Kira's back was gored before she managed to kill the creature. She called 911 just before losing consciousness.
When she woke up she discovered that in all the damage done by the animal, the bullet wound had been hidden. Still afraid to reveal her other identity, she convinced people that Kristen was Sword and strove to live her life drawing as little attention as possible. The shooter, meanwhile, was acquitted on the basis that he believed it was self-defense, but guilt led him to offer Kira enough money to be set for life.
Two years later she was approached by the bio-engineer, who had agreed to work for Quint. He had figured out the truth and felt guilty, so he stole a dose of nanites from Quint's organization that restored her legs and even fixed her nearsightedness. Not wanting the attention that would come from her miraculous recovery, she continued to use a wheelchair. Not long afterward the bio-engineer was killed by Quint's head scientist Maria Westing. When Kira learned of this she started snooping around and discovered how much Quint and Westing were involved in. She tried to ignore it, but eventually accepted that she couldn't escape the hero she was meant to be; and so Sever was born.

Backstory: Rina was one of her people's finest warriors, like her mother before her. It was widely believed that when the general retired she would be chosen to take his place. Then her brother got sick. It was Rina who demanded they remove his wings to save him, and afterward she felt guilty for how people looked at him. She hated her own people for looking down on Kaian, and one night without warning fled the mountains with him so he could live among humans. Only their father was told where they've gone, and he was warned not to try and bring them back. While Kaian walks among people, Rina must live in hiding because of her wings. She accepts this sacrifice for his sake.
They took shelter in a department store that was abandoned part-way through construction when money ran out. They knew a young man - Luke - slept downstairs, so they stuck to the upper level. One night Luke led Liam and Celeste there, and while exploring they found Kaian and Rina. Fascinated by these non-human beings, Liam offered to let them stay and eventually they joined the team.

Additional Notes on This Character: She'll never admit it, but it bothers her to see Kaian using artificial wings.

He sent Luke letters at first, but their parents found them and threw them away. Two years later Luke told his parents that enough was enough and he was leaving to find his twin. They responded by cutting off his access to their money. He left home and never went back.

He doesn't even know if his twin is now living as a boy or a girl. Without a permanent residence he was unable to get a steady job, and odd jobs earn him just enough for food and clothing. He's too stubborn to go to a shelter so he's been living on the streets.

When his wings began to rot away the doctors told him there was no hope. He accepted this, but Rina was not ready to lose her little brother. She insisted they cut off his wings so the corruption couldn't spread further. It saved his life, but no one wanted anything to do with him afterward. Backstory: At a young age Lynn realized his parents could not be responsible and he would have to take care of them. He took on all of the tasks that should have been theirs. When he was 12 his mother died of a heroin overdose, and he was taken and placed in foster care. His father committed suicide 6 months later. Lynn was an angry and asocial youth, and moved between several foster homes. In high school he slept around and dabbled in drugs. Everything changed when he got a girl pregnant. He was 18 when the baby was born, and the girl took off. Lynn was determined to be a better parent than his own. He applied himself in school and graduated with honors while holding two part-time jobs. He began writing children's books, and though his first two were flops the third began a wildly successful series that allowed him to live off the proceeds. He bought a large house on the outskirts of Marathon, where he expected to watch Cody grow up in peace.
One morning Lynn went into 7-year-old Cody's room to find the window broken and the boy gone. After a desperate search he found his son's body on the shore of the lake, a noose still around his neck. The madman responsible was found in a church, claiming he'd killed a demon. The funeral was the last time Lynn had human contact. He ordered groceries online and left the money on the porch. His editor's attempts to contact him were ignored. Just when she was giving up, a new manuscript arrived; a horror novel. His horrors soon became more popular than his children's books, and among fans his tragedy and madness became legend.

Character's role in the novel: Main character
Relationships with other characters:

1. Alex - Lynn considers Alex unnoteworthy, but finds his traits strangely endearing and eventually falls in love
2. Maddie - Currently the foremost of Lynn's fictional boarders, Maddie often confronts him with small truths but protects him from things he can't handle
3. Ramita Verma - Lynn's editor tries and fails to get him to open up, but she never gives up

Additional Notes on This Character: He hallucinates that the characters of his stories live with him. His fictional boarders have to remind him to eat. Though most of the time he believes his son is alive, he has never hallucinated Cody.

Unfortunately Kris is also schizophrenic, and his disorder manifests with violent outbursts. He would attack Alex or their mother with little provocation, once slamming his brother face-first into the edge of a stone step. The doctors said he was lucky his 'fall' didn't cause brain damage. Alex hid his brother's behavior because in between outbursts Kris was a good person, and Alex didn't want him to be taken away; and if Kris couldn't look after their mother she would be put in a hospital and Alex would lose them both.
At 16 he dropped out of school to care for his mother while Kris worked. Around that same time the stress started affecting his health; he suffered panic attacks and bouts with anorexia. He determined that he needed to escape sometimes; so every once in a while he would take off and spend a few nights on the streets. Some of the people he befriended taught him to swipe food, though since he knew he'd be going home eventually he gave away most of what he took.
One evening he was spotted shoplifting by a couple of off-duty cops, who gave chase. He ended up in front of an isolated house, and finding the door unlocked hid inside. The owner, Lynn, was about to turn him over when he heard one cop explaining to the other about his son. He angrily chased them away and said Alex could stay as long as he wanted as long as he was out of the way.

Cora volunteered to be his victim so he wouldn't hurt Caden. Things weren't too bad until she hit puberty and her illness began to manifest. Her madness made her father angry.
Joseph moved to a new town where no one knew he had two daughters, and converted the basement to a cell Cora was never allowed to leave. Caden would sneak in at night to feed Cora and treat her injuries, and Cora's world soon came to revolve around her sister.
On the night of Cora's 19th birthday Caden released her from the cell while their father slept, and they tried to run for it. Joseph woke and chased them with a broken beer bottle, slicing Cora's back open and causing her to smack her head on the ground hard enough to have a concussion. Then he turned on Caden. Cora tackled him to the ground, grabbed the bottle, and drove it into his throat. As she passed out, her final thought was how black his blood looked in the moonlight.
Cora woke two weeks later in a panic. She strangled the cop watching her hospital room into unconsciousness and stabbed a doctor and another patient during her escape. She stole a dress from a clothesline and found a quiet place to think, and that's when everything became clear; her father's blood was black because of the sin in it, weighing down his soul. Backstory: Loki was abducted as an infant by pixies and replaced with a changeling. He was spoiled rotten, treated like the universe revolved around him; until he started to grow up and the pixies got bored and switched back. He spent three nights on the streets. He didn't fit in in this world; he was lost and confused, and only 12 years old. Fortunately the first person to find him was Alastor. They are made into nightmares, and their names and pasts are sealed away. Like all nightmares, Bell spent her first hundred years working continuously; then she earned the status known as Mara's Trust, allowing her to work 12 hours a day and spend the remaining time on Earth, if she wishes. Interacting with humans, she came to understand fear; and quickly came to hate herself for causing it. Her guilt blinded her to anything but her faults, destroying her self-worth. She became desperate to learn her true name, which would allow her to reclaim her mortality. To this end she sought out Tess, hoping the reaper would have some knowledge of a woman who had disappeared without dying around the time she was made a nightmare. Tess couldn't help. Backstory: Damen Leonakos led a militant group which disapproved of foreigners in Greece, but their focus shifted with the discovery of non-humans and the revelation that Greece was a hub of vampiric activity. Inspired by myth, the group began attempting to breed dhampirs, who would supposedly be powerful beings perfectly suited to hunting and wiping out vampires. From their first round of experiments they determined that the infants would not survive unless nursed by a vampire, meaning they needed a cooperative mother. They found Aradia.
Aradia was the daughter of the Bakora clan's leader. She was captured when she wandered away from her clan and imprisoned in a secret facility. There, Damen approached her posing as a medical student and fellow prisoner charged with her health. He seduced her, and she was glad to bear his child.
Aradia accepted her new life. She couldn't leave, but she was treated well, and she was madly in love with Damen. Love blinded her to his manipulation. When their son grew into a child she allowed him to spend most of his time with Damen, who put him through experiments to test his abilities. To his frustration Charon wasn't nearly as powerful as the legends claimed, and in fact had been weakened by inheriting hemophilia. Determined not to let it all be for nothing, Damen and his partners pushed Charon to be the perfect hunter. When he told his mother she told him to endure their cruelty and wait for God to save them; when he tried to tell her about Damen's involvement she refused to believe him.
When Charon was sixteen a final test was prepared. Aradia was released in the crumbling wreckage of an earthquake zone. Charon was sent to hunt her. He shot her, and she lived just long enough to smile at him and press her cross into his hands. Then he went back and slaughtered everyone involved in the project. He didn't know anything about getting along in the world outside the compound, but he was a quick learner. He got a job from a boat captain willing to trade work for passage to America with no questions asked. He wanted to be as far from his birthplace as he could get.
He wandered to a big city and lived on the streets for a while, until he was careless and got cut. Krysta found him bleeding profusely and took care of him; his hemophilia coupled with his appearance led her to deduce he was a vampire, and she offered him a place in the safe-house she ran, in the guise of a homeless shelter. She and her granddaughter Beth, a werewolf, took to him immediately, and invited him to stay permanently.
Unfortunately, some of the people at Krysta's church figured out what she was doing and decided to teach her a lesson. One of them, a young woman named Anne, was expecting Krysta to visit her to discuss the church's food drive. It was agreed that while she was out the shelter would be burned down. But Krysta had seen the looks that passed between Anne and Charon. She sent him in her place, and she and Beth went to the shelter. By the time Anne found out and called the others it was too late. She told Charon, who rushed back and ran into the inferno but couldn't save the women.
Charon retrieved Krysta's book detailing the other safe-houses and set out for the nearest one to deliver the news of her death. He planned to move on right away but Tess kept convincing him to stay just a little longer, until he simply lost the will to leave.

Backstory: Sanura was the daughter of two doctors in Ancient Egypt, which granted her noble status. At 15 she married a priest, granting her the status of priestess in the temple of Bast. She sang, danced, and played the harp during the goddess' festive rituals. Serving a mother goddess meant she was expected to have many children; this never happened, so instead she took in orphans to care for.
When she was 23 marauders attacked the city. They made their way to the temple, hoping to loot its treasures. Sanura's husband was slain at the entrance. She ran inside, determined to destroy the temple rather that let it b desecrated. Barrels of wine stood everywhere in preparation for the great festival. She spilled the alcohol everywhere and ignited it, allowing herself to be consumed by the flames rather than leave herself in the hands of the invaders.
Unknown to Sanura, her goddess was watching. Bast is typically difficult to impress, but she deemed Sanura's courage worthy of reward. She returned Sanura to life, but in a form fitting a servant of the cat goddess; more feline than human. Sanura was now immortal, but all alone.
For a time she enjoyed the attention her form brought. She was worshipped as a goddess in her own right, and lavished with gifts. But with time beliefs changed; people abandoned the old gods and strange beings were viewed with suspicion or outright horror. She could no longer go among humans in her true form. She could take on human form, but for only a few hours. The loneliness was devastating; then she realized that there was one way to feel a strong connection to someone within those few hours. She began picking up strangers for sex. Soon it became her main form of interaction, and she came to feel uncomfortable around anyone she couldn't sleep with.
The one exception to this was Tess. Sanura's feline aspects made her the only sentient being who could see the reaper, and their shared loneliness led to a deep bond lasting millenia. It was Sanura who first named the reaper, and when she wanted a new name to reflect her new life it was Tess who suggested Eris. The one constant in Eris' life, the one thing that truly matters to her, is being with Tess.

Allegiance: Tess, her companions
Character's role in the novel: Supporting character
Relationships with other characters:

1. Alastor: Eris sees Alastor as too fatherly to flirt with, so she ignores him.
2. Tess: Tess is Eris' dearest friend and they are inseparable. They have a queerplatonic relationship.
3. Braelyn: Braelyn is cute and fun to tease, which makes her worthwhile in Eris' eyes
4. Mayon: Eris ignores Mayon until he gets a physical form; after which she finds him annoying because he doesn't understand her flirting
5. Bell: Eris is uncomfortable around Bell because she's so fragile that teasing her feels deeply wrong
6. Loki: Loki amuses Eris, as long as his pranks aren't directed at her.
7. Charon: Charon bores Eris as he pays no attention to her.
8. Chase: Eris is uncomfortable around Chase as he's too young to flirt with; she doesn't know how to act around him.

Additional Notes on This Character: Although quite superficial, she is surprisingly knowledgeable about classic art and will discuss it at length given the chance

Backstory: Amon's parents realized when he was very small that he was a heretic. Rather than let their child be killed, they moved to a city where no one knew them and managed to conceal his existence for six years. Eventually, however, a neighbor heard their daughter Cassie playing with someone and saw Amon. Realizing there was only one reason the Rais would keep their son a secret, he reported them to the military.
Amon woke during the night and discovered his parents dead and soldiers moving toward his bedroom. He dragged Cassie into the secret closet their father had built for him to hide in if necessary. They were well hidden, but when Cassie began to cry Amon was terrified that the 'monsters' would hear and covered her face to muffle the sound. He accidentally smothered her to death. Many hours later, after the soldiers had given up and left, he fled the house and the city.
He was found wandering by a stranger, William. William wanted to take him in, but Amon was far too frightened to trust anyone at the time. William instead led him to a small, unoccupied cabin, and Amon settled in. Every week William would deliver a box of food and other necessities, but to avoid upsetting the boy they had no real contact. Left all alone, Amon never moved past his PTSD. Twelve years later he still has flashbacks and cannot bring himself to ever say a word.

Backstory: As an infant, Andi was acquired by an underground slavery ring known as Ganymede. They raised children to be perfectly obedient, with no will or even sense of identity. The key to this was preventing the children from knowing it was even possible to live a different way. There is no resistance without hope, and one cannot hope for something they cannot comprehend the existence of.
At around age 7 Andi's ability started to emerge. He would catch fragments of voices coming from people even when they weren't speaking. From these half-heard thoughts he learned the shocking truth; that not all children were slaves, that the masters were not all-powerful, that there were people out  there who would stop Ganymede if they only knew it existed. This was also the age at which he was first sold. Emboldened by his new knowledge, he began to rebel in small ways. He would cry when hurt, or eat without permission. He was returned to Ganymede as defective. They attempted to train the disobedience out of him and for a time succeeded, and he was sold again. His new master was a deeply disturbed woman who drugged him into paralysis, sewed his lips shut, and played with him like a doll. Unable to move but conscious and aware, he struggled to convince himself that he was not just a plaything. He clung to the name he had been given at auction, telling himself over and over that Andromeda was a person, not a thing.
His master had several 'dolls', and one day her enabling father delivered a new one as she was administering the paralytic. She became excited and forgot that she hadn't dosed Andi. Eventually the previous dose wore off, and he found he could move again; not well enough to escape, but he grabbed a knife and cut the stitches on his lips. His master was so distraught that she could not bear to keep him and he was returned a second time.
He was by now around twelve, too old for most of Ganymede's patrons, and obviously flawed. They were going to simply cut their losses and kill him when a client came looking for disobedient children. He wanted his slaves rebellious so he could break them himself. For months Andi was terrorized. He was beaten mercilessly. Vicious dogs chased him through the house, encouraged by their master's cries of "Kill!" His talent was also growing stronger, reaching a point where he was in constant pain from the pressure in his head. Through it all he clung to his growing desire to be free. He discovered that fear paralyses but anger motivates, so he got angry. Angry about everything that had been done to him, everything that he had been denied. And when his anger overcame his fear he stole a knife and plunged it into his master's neck.
He fled from the house and ended up wandering the streets, seeing the outside world for the first time. Some people tried to help him, but he saw everyone as a threat. After living on the streets for a while he was found by William. William didn't pressure Andi to come home with him or go to a shelter, so Andi allowed the man to bring him food. Although Andi never accepted William's offers of shelter he allowed the man to provide for him through the years.

Backstory: Bastian's mother was a runaway and a prostitute. When she became pregnant she got scared and went back to her mother, her father having recently died. Even in the womb Bastian's power was developing, and the direct connection caused his mother to rapidly descend into madness. She had periods of amnesia, terrifying hallucinations, and total breaks from reality. She became convinced that the gods had placed a monster within her so she could atone for her sins by doing what was necessary to stop the monster's birth. When she was nearly at full term she killed herself. Doctors managed to save the baby and he was given to his grandmother to raise.
Anna Arsenault was always a stern woman, and the effect of Bastian's talent only made her harsher. She came to view him as sin incarnate, and told him so often. He snapped and stabbed her to death.
